Mountain Ash (Rowan) is best planted during the dormant season from November to March, as this gives the roots time to settle into the soil before spring growth begins. Planting in late autumn or winter often leads to stronger establishment because the tree can focus energy on root development rather than foliage. Container grown Rowan can be planted outside this window, but it will need consistent watering during dry spells, especially through spring and summer. Avoid planting when the ground is frozen or heavily waterlogged.
Choose an open position with good light and free draining soil, ideally with some shelter from strong winds. Dig a hole at least twice the width of the root ball to allow roots to spread easily, and loosen the soil at the base of the hole. Place the tree so it sits at the same depth it was previously growing, then backfill with soil and firm gently to remove air pockets. Water thoroughly after planting to help the soil settle around the roots. In exposed sites, staking is recommended for the first year to stabilise the tree as it establishes.
During the first growing season, water regularly, particularly in dry periods, as consistent moisture supports strong root development. Apply mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds, leaving a gap around the trunk to prevent rot. Keep grass and weeds away from the base of the tree to reduce competition for nutrients and water. Rowan is generally low maintenance once established, requiring only occasional pruning to remove dead, damaged or crossing branches and to maintain a tidy shape.
Rowan is valued for its delicate spring flowers and its bright berry display later in the year, making it a strong choice for seasonal interest. The flowers support pollinators, while the berries are a valuable food source for birds, adding biodiversity benefits to gardens and landscapes. It develops into an attractive, well shaped tree that works well as a feature tree, in rural planting schemes, or as part of native woodland and shelter planting. Reliable, hardy and visually appealing, Mountain Ash is well suited to Irish conditions and performs well across a range of sites.
