Hazel is a versatile native Irish tree widely used in hedging, woodland planting and coppicing schemes. It produces early spring catkins followed by edible hazelnuts in autumn, offering both wildlife value and practical use. Hazel is best planted during the dormant season from November to March, when the plant is not actively growing. Planting during this period allows the root system to establish naturally in the soil before spring growth begins, leading to stronger and faster establishment. Bare root Hazel should always be planted within this window, while container grown plants can be planted at other times of the year with regular watering. Avoid planting when the ground is frozen, waterlogged or extremely dry.
Hazel can be planted as a hedge, in woodland planting schemes or as individual trees, depending on your requirements. When planting as a hedge, dig a trench wide enough to spread the roots comfortably and space plants evenly to ensure good density as they mature. For individual trees, dig a hole at least twice the width of the root system and loosen the soil at the base. Position the plant so it sits at the same depth it was growing previously, backfill with soil, firm gently and water thoroughly after planting to encourage root establishment.
During the first growing season, keep the area around the base of the Hazel plant free from weeds and grass to reduce competition for nutrients and moisture. Water during prolonged dry spells, particularly in the first year after planting. Hazel responds very well to management and can be coppiced every few years if desired, or left to grow naturally into a multi-stem tree. Once established, Hazel is hardy and requires minimal ongoing maintenance.
Hazel is valued for its early spring catkins, dense growth habit and the production of edible hazelnuts in autumn. It provides excellent shelter and food for wildlife, making it a popular choice for native hedging, woodland creation and biodiversity projects. Hazel grows well in Irish conditions and is highly adaptable, making it suitable for gardens, rural landscapes and environmental planting schemes where a native, long-lasting species is required.
