Alder supports a wide range of wildlife and is ideal for environmental and landscape planting projects.
Alder is best planted during the dormant season from November to March, when the tree is not actively growing. Planting during this period allows the roots to establish naturally in the soil before spring growth begins, which is especially important for a fast growing species like Alder. Bare root Alder should always be planted within this window. Container grown trees can be planted outside the dormant season but will require regular watering, particularly in dry weather. Avoid planting when the ground is frozen or excessively waterlogged.
Alder thrives in damp, wet or poorly drained soils, making it ideal for planting near rivers, ponds, drainage areas or low lying land. Dig a hole at least twice the width of the root ball and loosen the soil at the base to encourage root spread. Position the tree so it sits at the same depth it was previously growing, backfill with soil and firm gently to remove air pockets. Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil around the roots. In exposed areas, staking may be required during the first year to provide stability.
During the first growing season, water regularly to support strong root establishment, especially during dry spells. Keep the area around the base of the tree free from weeds and grass to reduce competition. Mulching helps retain moisture and improve soil conditions. Once established, Alder requires very little maintenance and is highly resilient, making it a reliable choice for challenging planting sites.
Alder is valued for its fast growth, tolerance of wet ground and ability to improve soil conditions over time. It is commonly used in wetland planting, riverbank stabilisation, shelter belts and native landscape schemes. Alder also supports a wide range of wildlife, making it an excellent choice for environmental and biodiversity focused projects. Well suited to Irish conditions, it performs reliably where many other tree species struggle.
