Flowering Cherry trees are best planted from autumn through to early spring, when the tree is dormant and soil conditions allow for good root establishment. Planting during this period helps the tree settle in before the growing season begins, resulting in stronger growth and better flowering performance. Container grown flowering cherry trees can be planted outside this window with consistent watering. Avoid planting during frost or when the soil is waterlogged.
Choose a sunny, open position with free draining soil to encourage healthy growth and abundant flowering. Dig a hole at least twice the width of the root ball and loosen the soil at the base. Place the tree so the root collar sits level with the surrounding ground, backfill with soil and firm gently. Water thoroughly after planting to eliminate air pockets. In exposed locations, staking is recommended during the first year to support the tree as it establishes.
Water regularly during the first growing season, particularly during dry spells, to help the tree develop a strong root system. Apply mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds, ensuring it does not touch the trunk. Flowering cherry trees require minimal pruning; remove only damaged, dead or crossing branches to maintain structure. Excessive pruning should be avoided as it can reduce flowering.
