Apple trees are best planted during the dormant season from November to March. Planting at this time allows the root system to establish before spring growth begins. Container grown trees can also be planted outside this period, provided watering is maintained during dry spells. Avoid planting during periods of frost or when the ground is waterlogged.
Choose a sunny, sheltered location with well draining soil. Dig a hole at least twice the width of the root ball to allow roots to spread easily. Place the tree so the root collar sits level with the surrounding ground, backfill with soil, firm gently and water thoroughly. In exposed locations, staking is recommended to support the tree during establishment.
Water regularly during the first growing season, particularly in dry weather. Apply mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds, keeping it clear of the trunk. Light winter pruning helps shape the tree and encourages healthy growth and fruiting. Once established, apple trees are low maintenance.
